Internships

One integral component of IHRE is an internship at a Johannesburg civil society organization. Students undertake substantive work under the guidance of an in-house mentor, working approximately 10-12 hours a week, on Thursdays and Fridays.
Separate academic credit is not given for the internship; rather, it is a component of the core seminar Engagement with Human Rights. Through their coursework, students examine the theory and practice of human rights advocacy. Reading assignments, papers and class discussion address themes that will resonate with students as they take on their internships. Students will also be encouraged to keep a journal about their experiences.
IHRE students have worked with more than 30 leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in South Africa. In general, the work undertaken at an IHRE host organization includes research, advocacy, training, editing, event planning, and other matters related to the human rights work carried out by the host organization.
For a more detailed overview of the internship placements typically offered through the IHRE program please download and review our IHRE Internship Guide.
