You should consult with your academic advisor to determine if any of the IHRE courses will fulfill requirements at your home institution.
What do I need to qualify for the IHRE program?
Our application asks you to submit the completed application form, a personal statement, letters of recommendation from your professors and your most recent transcripts. Applicants must be in good academic and behavioral standing with their home institutions.
Does my financial aid apply to the program?
Financial aid awards may or may not transfer depending on the home institution. Please check with your study abroad and financial aid office as they have the final say. In situations where institutional aid does not transfer, you will be considered for scholarships available directly from IHRE.

Can I visit other places in South Africa during the semester?
The Wits semester includes a one-week "spring break" in August/September and a four-week examination period at the end of the semester. The IHRE program formally ends after exams. However, some IHRE participants may choose to spend time traveling in South Africa or the region.
Can I arrange my own internship?
No. The IHRE internship coordinator will place you with a host. After you have been accepted to the program you will have the opportunity to submit a list of your internship preferences. Our internship coordinator has an extensive amount of knowledge in the NGO field in SA and we do our best to match you with your ideal internship.
What documentation/immunization do I need for South Africa?
All participants from North American institutions must apply for a South African study permit. No special immunizations are required for Johannesburg.
What do I pack?
There is a suggested packing list inside the student handbook, which can be downloaded with a password supplied by IHRE staff. Please e-mail ihre@bard.edu and we will be happy to give you the password. Alternatively, you can also visit the "What to Bring" portion of the website.
How much spending money do I need?
Spending money will vary depending on your personal spending habits and goals but we advise that you plan to budget at least $1,500 for personal expenses.
Should I bring my laptop?
There are computer labs on campus that are available to all students. We cautiously advise you to bring your laptop to avoid waiting for computer usage, but place it in safe keeping when not in use by using a laptop lock.
