Health and Safety

South Africa is in many respects a developed country, but much of its population lives in poverty. All major urban areas have modern, world-class hotels and tourist facilities. Game parks and areas most often visited by tourists have a wide range of facilities. Food and water are generally safe, and a wide variety of consumer goods and pharmaceuticals are readily available.

There is a plethora of opinions and experiences about safety in Johannesburg. The IHRE Program strongly recommends that students come to South Africa prepared, by being well read on the country, including its recent history and current political and social climate. However, the IHRE program also emphasizes that students must come to South Africa with an open mind about all things South African, including the level of safety and security on the street in Johannesburg.

We will provide many opportunities for US students to learn about safety and security on the ground, from IHRE staff and fellow participants, during the program orientation on the Wits campus.
