Frequently Asked Questions

Will IHRE classes count towards my major?

Please consult with your academic advisor to discuss your intention to study with IHRE.  They can best help students figure out how a semester with IHRE fits into the academic requirements at a student's home institution.

Can I arrange my own internship?

No.  The IHRE internship coordinator places students in internships.  Once accepted into the program students submit a list of internship preferences.

Can you guarantee that I will work in a specific internship?

No.  We will do our best to match you with your ideal internship based on the preferences you provide to us and the needs of the internship hosts.  We will do our best to make sure you work with one of your top choices.

Can students enroll in non-IHRE courses?

Students from North American institutions are encouraged to consider enrolling in a non-IHRE course at Wits.  More information can be found on the Non-IHRE Courses section of our website.

What is the GPA requirement for admission to your programs?

There is no particular GPA requirement for students (although a 3.0 and above is preferred).  We take all of the information presented in a student's application when considering admission to the program.  However, students must meet the minimum GPA established by their home institution for students wishing to study overseas.  Applicants must be in good academic and behavioral standing with their home institution.

Does my financial aid apply to the program?

Financial aid awards may or may not transfer depending on the policies of the home institution.  Please check with both your study abroad and financial aid office as they have the final say.  In situations where institutional aid does not transfer, students may be considered for scholarships available through Bard.  Additional information on how to apply for scholarship support is included in the application packet.

Can I talk to a past participation of the program?

Absolutely!  We encourage it.  Please contact us and we will put you in touch with program alumni.

Can I visit other places in South Africa during the semester?

There is a one week break in late August / early September during which time students may travel if they wish.  Some students stay on after the program is over and travel at that time.  Missing classes or internship obligations to travel during the program is not acceptable.
