Orientation

Students in the International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) program participate in a a comprehensive orientation prior to the start of the program, starting with a pre departure workshop in New York City.  The pre departure workshop typically includes:

 

  • Community-building activities
  • Discussion of participant expectations
  • Review of IHRE program policies and guidelines
  • Overview of IHRE academic expectations
  • Tips for successful cross-cultural engagement
  • Interaction with IHRE program alumni

 

Upon completion of the pre departure workshop, students fly together on the group flight to Johannesburg.

After arriving in South Africa, students participate in an orientation program in Johannesburg.  During the in-country orientation, students have a chance to become even more familiar with the IHRE program, the University of the Witwatersrand, and Johannesburg.  Topics covered typically include:

 

  • Introduction to key people at IHRE and at Wits
  • Further overview of IHRE policies and academics
  • Safety and security in Johannesburg and at Wits
  • Student services and activities
  • Internship overview
  • Tour of Wits campus
  • Information on a wide variety of practicalities, including: money, banking, health care, internet access, cell phones, dorms, meal plans, etc.
